justice
   A concept concerned with the morally justifiable treatment of individuals, each person being treated appropriately according to his or her circumstances. It is about fairness or rightness in the application of rule, the settling of disputes and the distribution of benefits and goods between people. It involves ‘doing the right thing’ which may also mean doing what the law demands. But law and justice cannot necessarily be equated, some laws such as those that once supported slavery now being considered ‘unjust’. Justice is concerned with ethical considerations, prescribing what the situation should be, whereas law has an objective character rather than a matter of opinion or judgement. Justice is desirable, law is enforceable and binding throughout a political community.
   The particular meaning of justice may vary over time, between one society or culture and another. It will be regarded differently, according to the political and religious beliefs and interests of individuals. For instance, one person might consider it wrong and ‘unjust’ to take human life under any circumstances, whereas many could agree that there are times when it might be necessary, however undesirable.
